Richard joined the Railway Training Scheme in 1990, before moving to announcers position in Reading PSB in 1991. He stayed as an announcer when they were moved to Platform 4 in about 1994, then became roster clerk for the station staff in 1995. Richard moved to Thames Trains in 1998 as a performance clerk, moving on to a Controller in Thames Control then into the IT Department with Thames. He left the railway in 2004 to pursue a career in IT in the real world.
