Stan Thompson

Stan started working for British railways in August 1958 as a Lad Messenger at Reading West Junction. His first signalling post was as a Booking Boy at Scours Lane SB in 1959. Over the years Stan has worked in Reading West Main (unofficially!), Tilehurst, Pangbourne, Goring, Appleford, Kennington, Wolvercote, Kidlington, Heyford, Reading West, Southcote, Calcot Mill, Theale, Ufton Crossing, Aldermaston, Midgham, Thatcham, Bulls Lock, Newbury Racecourse, Newbury East, Newbury Middle, Newbury West, Hamstead, Kintbury, Hungerford, Bedwyn, Savernake West, Woodborough, Lavington, Ashendon Junction, Princes Risborough North, Wycombe North, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Denham Golf, Saunderton, Greenford East, Park Royal, North Acton, Bicester London Road, Bicester MOD, Islip, Paddington Arrivals (booking), Subway, Portobello, Ladbroke Grove, North Pole, White City, Kensington South Main, Hayes & Harlington, Acton West, Acton East, Old Oak Loco, Old Oak Panel (old and new), Twyford, Shiplake, Henley on Thames, Bourne End, Cookham, Loudwater, also Enbourne Junction, Pewsey and Patney & Chirton as a ground handsignalman.

Stan came to Reading Panel as a booking boy(!) when it first opened in 1965, alternating 12 hour days and nights with Tony Barry. Once the regular signalmen were all fully trained, he worked as a passenger guard for a year before returning to signalling duties at Henley on Thames. Stan transferred to the Tamping Pool, did a short spell in Reading PSB as a relief signalman, before moving to Old Oak Common. Stan returned to Reading PSB in 1973 as a signalman, then gained promotion to Panel Supervisor in December 1984. Stan's last post was as a Mobile Operations Manager at Reading, before retiring in October 2007.
